Splice has released two new AI tools that let music producers transform and remix any sample in its 3-million-sound library while automatically compensating the original creator. Variations and Craft launched on April 15, 2026, and extend Splice's existing royalty model into AI-generated content for the first time.

What Happened

Splice introduced Variations and Craft, two AI-powered tools available now inside its Sounds and INSTRUMENT plugins.

Variations lets producers generate new versions of any sample in the Splice catalog by adjusting structure, key, and BPM while preserving the original sound's core characteristics. It works inside the Sounds plugin and integrates directly into digital audio workstations including Ableton, Logic, and Pro Tools. The original creator receives a credit payout every time their sound is used as the source and every time a variation is downloaded.

Craft is a companion feature inside the Splice INSTRUMENT plugin that converts any sample into a fully playable instrument. A one-shot drum hit, a vocal chop, or a synth stab can be mapped across the keyboard and played chromatically in any key.

A third tool, Magic Fit, is planned for Summer 2026 and will automatically adapt any Splice sound to match the harmonic and rhythmic context of an open session in the DAW.

Why It Matters

The compensation model is the core differentiator. Most generative AI music tools train on data without ongoing creator payments, or build entirely on synthetic audio. Splice links every AI-generated variation back to the human-made original in its catalog, and the original creator gets paid each time that connection is used.

For producers, Variations removes one of the most friction-heavy parts of sample-based production: finding a sound that is close to what you need but not quite right in key, tempo, or structure. Instead of searching for an alternate sample or manually chopping and pitching, producers can generate a version tuned to their session in seconds.

Splice CEO Kakul Srivastava framed the launch as extending traditional sampling culture into AI rather than replacing it. The company acquired AI voice platform Kits AI in January 2026 and partnered with Universal Music Group in late 2025, building a consistent approach to AI features on licensed, compensated content.

What to Do Next

If you already have a Splice subscription, Variations is accessible inside the Sounds plugin with no separate activation. Update the plugin to the latest version if you do not see it. Craft is inside the INSTRUMENT plugin. Both tools work on any existing sound pack or subscription tier.

If you are evaluating AI music tools for audio production, Variations is the most practical entry point for producers who already work with samples, it turns the entire Splice catalog into an instrument library that can be tuned to any session automatically.
