On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed its two Max plans. Max 5x is now simply Max, still $100 a month, and Max 20x is now Ultra, still $200. Prices did not move. What did change is on Ultra: verified accounts no longer have a 5-hour limit, only a weekly one, set at 10 times Pro. Max now includes $100 a month in Claude API credits, and Ultra includes $200.
The figures on Anthropic's own pricing page show something the announcement did not spell out. Pro at $20 buys 1x of weekly usage, Max at $100 buys 5x and Ultra at $200 buys 10x. Every plan costs $20 per unit of weekly Claude. Ultra does not make Claude cheaper per message. It takes away the 5-hour clock. This guide explains what that means for writers, video editors, designers and podcasters who use Claude in the app, and how to choose a plan in about 15 minutes using the usage screen you already have.
What Changed on October 30
The pricing page as it stood on October 26 sold Max 5x and Max 20x. Both multipliers described a 5-hour session: 5 or 20 times what Pro gets in one session. The new page lists Max at "5x Pro usage" every 5 hours and every week, and Ultra at "10x Pro usage" every week, with "No 5-hour limit" for verified accounts.
That means "20x" was never a weekly figure. CellCog compared the old and new pages and quotes Anthropic's announcement saying weekly limits "remain unchanged". So the name changed, the session cap went away for verified Ultra accounts, and the weekly ceiling stayed where it was. Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically at the same price, and nobody had to do anything.
The catch is the word "verified". Anthropic's help article says it verifies Ultra accounts automatically, using factors such as account and payment history. Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not lift the limit. Until your account is verified, a temporary 5-hour limit applies. Anthropic told subscribers that newer accounts get an email once it is lifted.
Claude Pro vs Max vs Ultra Side by Side
Here is every consumer plan as Anthropic lists it on November 2, 2026. The "price per 1x of weekly usage" row is our own sum: the monthly price divided by the weekly multiple of Pro.
| Pro | Max | Ultra | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $20 (about $17 a month billed yearly) | $100 | $200 |
| Weekly usage vs Pro | 1x | 5x | 10x |
| Price per 1x of weekly usage | $20 (about $17 yearly) | $20 | $20 |
| 5-hour limit | Yes, 1x | Yes, 5x Pro | None for verified accounts |
| Fable | Usage credits only | Up to half the weekly limit | Up to half the weekly limit |
| API credits each month | None | $100 | $200 |
| Billing | Monthly or yearly | Monthly only | Monthly only |
The flat $20 per unit is the useful number. Upgrading does not buy you a discount on Claude. It buys room: a bigger session window on Max, no session window on Ultra and a bigger weekly ceiling on both. The only cheaper Claude per unit is Pro billed yearly, at about $17 a month, which Max and Ultra do not offer because both are sold monthly only.
Anthropic's footnote matters too: "How fast you reach a limit depends on the model you use." Opus and Fable use up your allowance faster than Sonnet. A creator who keeps Sonnet for routine work, such as captions, show notes and first drafts, and saves Opus for a hard rewrite, can stay on a smaller plan for longer.

What No 5-Hour Limit Means in a Working Day
On Pro and Max, usage is counted in 5-hour windows. If you spend a morning revising a long script or working through 40 product descriptions, you can hit the session cap at 2 PM and wait for the window to reset, even with most of your week still unused. The New Stack called the session cap one of Claude's biggest usage limits, and on verified Ultra accounts it is gone.
With no session cap, Ultra lets you spend your week however you like. A YouTuber who writes a week of video scripts in one Sunday sitting, an editor who runs every transcript from a shoot through Claude on the day footage arrives, or a designer preparing a client launch can put most of the weekly allowance into one long day. The weekly limit is the only stop. Anthropic's help article adds that it may set other caps, weekly, monthly or on specific models, so "no 5-hour limit" does not mean unlimited.
If your use is steady, about the same each day, the missing session cap gains you little. Max already gives you five Pro sessions' worth in every window. Ultra pays off for people who work in bursts.

How Fable Works on Each Plan
Fable, Anthropic's top model family, is handled differently on each plan, and the difference is larger than the price gap suggests. According to Anthropic's Fable plan article, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are on every paid plan, but:
- Pro: Fable is not part of the plan limits. Every Fable message is paid for with usage credits from the first one. Pro accounts got a one-time credit in July 2026 when Fable 5 moved to usage credits, as we covered in our Fable plan pricing explainer. There is no matching credit for Fable 5.1.
- Max and Ultra: "You can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost." Fable uses the limit faster than other models. Once you reach the Fable cap, you can keep going with usage credits or switch to another model.
Since Ultra's weekly limit is twice Max's, its Fable allowance is twice as large in absolute terms: half of 10x against half of 5x. If Fable is the model you write with, check last month's usage-credit spending on Pro. If you regularly spend more than $80, the gap between Pro and Max, the move up likely pays for itself.

The API Credits Are Not for Chatting
The new monthly credits ($100 on Max, $200 on Ultra) look like a refund on the plan, but they are not. Anthropic's API credits article says they cover the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. They do not cover chatting in Claude, interactive Claude Code, Cowork or any extra usage there, and they do not raise your plan limits. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
To claim them, go to Settings, then Billing, find the API credits section and choose "Link organization", then pick or create a Console organization. You can link only one organization, and changing it later means contacting support. The Console Playground is a web page where you can type prompts without writing code. Even so, for most creators the credits are a bonus for a developer you work with or for a later project. They are not a reason to upgrade.
How This Compares With ChatGPT Pro This Week
OpenAI changed its own plans the same week. On October 29 it doubled the Work and Codex allowance on its $100 and $500 Pro plans and cancelled a planned cut to Pro $200, ProPakistani reported. OpenAI warned that a doubled allowance "does not necessarily mean users can complete twice as many tasks." SmartScope, working from OpenAI's release notes, adds that the notes do not say whether the doubling is permanent.
Two days later OpenAI updated its help center with a bigger change. From December, ChatGPT conversations with advanced models and Codex will draw on one shared allowance, measured in tokens, on Plus, Pro and Business. Instant chats will not count against it. CellCog's read of the help article notes that OpenAI has not published the size of any plan's allowance, and a StockTwits report on Yahoo Finance gives December 31 as the start date.
For a creator choosing which $200 to spend, the two companies now differ in what they publish. Claude Ultra states a weekly multiple of Pro and has no session clock. ChatGPT's chat limits are about to change shape and the new numbers are not public yet. Which assistant writes better for your kind of work is a separate question, and our Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers it.
Which Claude Plan to Pick: A 15-Minute Check
You don't need to guess. The Claude app already shows the two numbers that decide this.
- Open Settings, then Usage. Over a normal working week, note two things: how often the current session bar reaches the top, and how full the weekly bar is by the end of the week.
- Never hit either bar? Stay on Pro, and switch to yearly billing if you are sure you will keep it. At about $17 a month, it is the cheapest Claude per unit.
- Hit the session bar on Pro but finish the week with room left? Move to Max. You get five times the session window and five times the weekly ceiling for $100.
- Hit the weekly bar on Max, or work in long bursts? Move to Ultra. Then check Settings, Usage again: if you still see a "Current session" bar, your account is not verified yet and the temporary 5-hour limit still applies.
- Write mostly with Fable? Add up last month's Fable usage credits on Pro. If they come to more than $80, Max is cheaper, and Ultra doubles the Fable allowance again.
- Leave the API credits out of the decision unless you, or someone you pay, builds with the Claude API.
What to Do Next
Before your next renewal date, spend one ordinary week watching the Usage screen and then run the check above. Max and Ultra bill monthly only, so you can move between them each month. Pro is the only plan where a yearly commitment saves money.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Claude Ultra the same as Max 20x?
Yes. Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra on October 30, 2026, and existing subscribers moved over automatically at the same $200 a month. The difference is that verified Ultra accounts have no 5-hour limit. The weekly limit is 10 times Pro.
Does Claude Ultra have unlimited usage?
No. Ultra has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. Only the 5-hour session limit is gone, and only on verified accounts. Anthropic says it may add other caps, such as monthly limits or limits on specific models.
How do I know if my Ultra account is verified?
Open Settings, then Usage. If you do not see a "Current session" bar, the account is verified. Anthropic verifies automatically based on account and payment history, and verifying your phone at checkout does not count.
Can I use the Max or Ultra API credits for chatting in Claude?
No. The $100 and $200 monthly credits apply to the Claude API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. They do not pay for chat, Claude Code or Cowork usage, and they expire at the end of each billing cycle.
Is Fable included on Claude Pro?
Fable is available on Pro but is not part of the plan's limits. Every Fable message on Pro is paid with usage credits. On Max and Ultra, Fable can use up to half of the weekly limit at no extra cost.
Which Claude plan is cheapest per message?
On monthly billing they are the same: $20 for each 1x of Pro's weekly usage on Pro, Max and Ultra. Pro on yearly billing, at about $17 a month, is the only cheaper option. Which model you use matters more than which plan you are on, because Opus and Fable use your limits faster than Sonnet.
