Meta rolled out a wave of Muse Spark-powered features across the Meta AI app, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads on May 12, 2026. The headline change for creators: a natural voice mode that interrupts, switches topics, and generates images mid-conversation, plus a Grok-style @meta.ai mention you can drop into any Threads post or reply.
The features run on Muse Spark, the multimodal reasoning model Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced April 8 as a replacement for Llama in the Meta AI app.
What this enables
If you run a Threads or Instagram presence, three new surfaces are worth wiring into your weekly workflow:
- Voice-to-image drafts. Open Meta AI on iOS or Android, switch to voice, and brainstorm a Reels thumbnail aloud. Muse Spark generates images while you keep talking, so you can iterate on a prompt without breaking flow.
- @meta.ai replies on Threads. Tag the assistant in a post and it answers publicly under the thread, exactly the way Grok replies on X. Useful for explainer posts, source pulls, or a quick fact check inside your audience's feed.
- Side chats in group DMs. Tap the Meta AI icon inside a group chat to get a private answer grounded in what the group is discussing, without spamming the group.
Why it matters
Meta's apps reach more than three billion users across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads, so an assistant baked into search bars, group chats, and replies is a distribution surface no creator-AI startup can match on reach. The Threads mention feature in particular mirrors what X did with Grok, and it pulls AI replies into the public conversation layer where engagement is measured.
For creators, the practical shift is that the same assistant now lives where you already post. Image generation and recommendations happen inside the app where you publish.
Key details
Voice conversations and live AI camera are rolling out in the Meta AI app first. Cross-platform mentions and side chats are starting as tests, with Threads @meta.ai replies launching in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore before a wider rollout. India is getting Hindi and Bengali voice support alongside English. Muse Spark itself is also expanding to Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses in the US and Canada over the next few weeks, with Meta Ray-Ban Display following this summer. Access is free inside Meta's consumer apps; there is no paid tier yet, and developer access is still via a private API preview.
What to do next
Test the @meta.ai Threads mention this week if you post in any of the launch regions; otherwise, get the voice conversation flow on your phone and try it as a real-time image brainstorm partner before the next round of Google I/O launches arrives May 19. The Android Show platform shifts from May 12 already reset the surface area for assistant features, and Meta is closing the gap fast.
