Meta announced Incognito Chat for its AI assistant on May 13, bringing private conversations to WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. The feature uses WhatsApp's Private Processing technology: messages are handled in a secure, isolated environment, are not stored after the session ends, and cannot be read by Meta's servers.

What Happened

Incognito Chat works differently from every other major AI assistant. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude all store conversation history by default and use it to personalize future responses unless users manually opt out. Meta's approach builds privacy at the infrastructure level. According to the official Meta announcement, "no one, not even Meta, can read your conversations." Messages vanish by default when the session ends.

The feature launches on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. A second feature called Sidechat is also in development and will offer private AI assistance inside active WhatsApp conversations, accessing the context of what's being discussed without interrupting the main thread. TechCrunch notes that with 3 billion monthly WhatsApp users, this represents the largest potential rollout of private AI conversations in history.

Why It Matters

Creators frequently need AI help for sensitive topics: a client's medical campaign brief, legally sensitive script research, financial copy for regulated products, or personal creative projects not yet ready to share publicly. Until now, using an AI assistant for sensitive research meant accepting that the conversation would be logged, potentially used for training, and subject to data breach risk. Incognito Chat removes that tradeoff by design rather than by policy opt-out.

Key Details

  • Available on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app (not Instagram or Messenger yet)
  • Rolling out gradually over the coming months, not globally available today
  • Messages are not saved and disappear when the session ends
  • Built on WhatsApp's Private Processing infrastructure
  • Sidechat (in-conversation private AI help) is a follow-up feature still in development

Creator Outcome: When to Use Incognito Chat

Once Incognito Chat reaches your region, use it for any research you would not want in a permanent log: client health briefs, competitive intelligence queries, sensitive interview prep, or early-stage creative concepts you are protecting. For day-to-day creative work where history helps (ongoing project context, prompt refinement, reference building), stick with standard Meta AI, which is covered alongside other recent launches in the Meta AI voice mode and Threads mentions guide.
