Blackmagic Design's Neural Engine released DaVinci Resolve 21 as a free public beta at NAB Show 2026 on April 21. The update adds 10 AI tools to the editing, color, Fusion, and audio pages, all included at no cost in the free version of the software.

What Happened

Blackmagic announced DaVinci Resolve 21 at its NAB 2026 booth in Las Vegas, with hands-on demos running on the show floor. The public beta is available for free download from the Blackmagic Design website now. The headlining structural addition is a new Photo Page: a node-based color grading environment for still images, with Sony and Canon camera tethering and Blackmagic Cloud integration for multi-user collaboration.

Why It Matters

DaVinci Resolve is already the industry standard for color grading and is widely used by editors who cannot afford Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro subscriptions. Adding AI tools to the free tier raises the floor for independent filmmakers and content creators without increasing costs. The feature set targets two of the most time-consuming parts of post-production: finding footage fast with IntelliSearch, and executing clean focus pulls with CineFocus. Both tasks previously required third-party tools or hours of manual work.

For AI creators specifically, the Face Age Transformer and Face Reshaper are non-destructive facial modification tools that work directly in the timeline, without exporting to an external retouching app. Combined with the updated Magic Mask for rotoscoping, Resolve 21 closes a gap that previously required After Effects or a dedicated mobile app for this kind of subject manipulation.

Key Details

  • AI IntelliSearch: Search footage clips by objects, people, keywords, or spoken dialogue with no manual metadata tagging required.
  • AI CineFocus: AI-powered rack focus with adjustable aperture, focal range, and bokeh depth; fully keyframeable.
  • AI Speech Generator: Generate speech from text using Blackmagic voice models or a sample of your own voice.
  • AI Face Age Transformer: Adds or removes age-related facial features on tracked faces, non-destructively.
  • AI Face Reshaper: Adjust eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and overall face shape in the timeline.
  • AI Blemish Removal: Reduces skin imperfections while preserving natural texture.
  • AI UltraSharpen: Advanced sharpening tool for upscaled or slightly out-of-focus footage.
  • AI Motion Deblur: Removes motion blur from fast-moving subjects frame by frame.
  • AI SlateID: Automatically reads slate information from camera footage for clip organization.
  • AI Magic Mask (updated): Object and person masking for VFX and color isolation workflows.
  • New Photo Page: Node-based still image editing with Sony and Canon tethering and Blackmagic Cloud sync.
  • Pricing: All new AI tools are included free. DaVinci Resolve Studio ($295 one-time) adds noise reduction, collaboration, and multi-user features.

What to Do Next

Download the public beta from the Blackmagic Design website. If you edit video regularly, IntelliSearch alone justifies the install: searching footage by spoken word or visible object eliminates the manual bin-labeling step that most editors skip entirely or spend hours doing.

CineFocus is worth testing on existing projects before Blackmagic finalizes the behavior based on NAB feedback. The Face Age Transformer and Face Reshaper are best evaluated against your current retouching workflow to see if timeline integration saves a round-trip to a dedicated app.
