Adobe has launched two new AI-powered image editing features in Firefly: Precision Flow generates a spectrum of visual variations from a single prompt, while AI Markup lets creators draw directly on images to guide AI edits with spatial precision.
What Happened
Adobe rolled out Precision Flow and AI Markup in the Firefly image editor. Precision Flow (in beta) takes a single text prompt and generates multiple image variations along a slider, letting creators explore different lighting, weather, mood, and time-of-day options without rewriting prompts. AI Markup (generally available) enables direct annotation on the canvas to control exactly where and how AI edits are applied.
Both features join Firefly's existing suite of generative tools: Generative Fill, Generative Remove, Generative Expand, Generative Upscale, and Remove Background. Creative Cloud subscribers get unlimited generations.
Why It Matters
The two features address the biggest pain point in AI image editing: getting from "close enough" to exactly right. Precision Flow eliminates the prompt lottery by showing a range of interpretations, while AI Markup solves the spatial control problem that plagues text-only interfaces. Together, they create a more directed creative workflow where the AI responds to visual intent, not just text descriptions.
This positions Firefly as a more capable competitor to Stability AI's Brand Studio, which launched days earlier with its own precision editing tools for brands. The difference: Adobe's tools are integrated into the Creative Cloud ecosystem that millions of creators already use.
Key Details
- Precision Flow (beta): Generates a spectrum of variations from one prompt with slider control for lighting, weather, mood, and style intensity
- AI Markup (GA): Draw, annotate, and add targeted prompt boxes directly on the canvas to guide AI edits
- Tools: Brush for sketching and erasing, rectangle tool for targeting areas, multiple prompt boxes for layered edits
- Pricing: Unlimited generations for Creative Cloud subscribers
- Platform: Firefly web editor
What to Do Next
Creative Cloud subscribers can access both features in the Firefly image editor now. Precision Flow works best for exploration at the start of a project, while AI Markup is ideal for refining nearly-finished images. Start with a generated or uploaded image, use Precision Flow to explore the direction, then switch to AI Markup for precise spatial edits that text prompts alone cannot achieve.
